Canon Powershot SX260 HS

Posted by vitya On September - 22 - 2012

For a pocket camera to have 20x zoom is nothing great these days, but a 20x optical zoom is really out of the box.

The Canon Powershot SX260 HS sticks out from the competition with its three-tier telescopic lens which protrudes almost six inches out of the body at full zoom.

Another gimmick you might say. Well, no. This is a zoom that actually works, despite all the shake a telescopic lens brings into the picture. At full zoom it is very hard to avoid tremors, but the image stabilization in the camera takes care of most of it, at least in good light. In low light you will need to hold your breath in and hope that your hands are steady enough for the job. Else, switch to easy mode where you get assistance from the flash. So, one way or the other, you are sure to get good pictures even at full zoom. Read the rest of this entry »

CANON POWERSHOT D20

Posted by vitya On August - 14 - 2012

The D20 stands out from the pack with a rather unique design, somehow reminiscent of a shark. The buttons are designed to be very usable in various outdoor situations. Those on the rear are well spaced-out, and are raised high enough that you won’t need to press down too hard in order to operate the camera. The D-pad in particular is well-designed, with separate buttons for each direction making it easy to navigate the menus even when you’re wearing gloves. The D20 sports a ridged thumb rest that provides a good grip too, unlike the rest of the rugged cameras (with the exception of the Nikon AW100′s unique locking system), the D20 has a single latch for the battery compartment. While the D20′s menus are simple enough, having three separate menus (shooting settings, mode and camera setup) accessed via three different buttons can be a little troublesome.

Canon powershot sx230 hs Camera

The Powershot SX260 HS manages to stick to the traditional square lines of a compact camera while still sporting a contemporary look. While there’s no thumb rest on the rear, the strategically-placed mode dial actually helps to keep your thumb wedged in place between the LCD screen and the dial itself. The mode dial requires some effort to rotate, and while we’re sure that’s to prevent users from accidentally switching modes with their thumb while shooting, it does require one to have both hands on the camera if you intend to switch modes. The SX260 HS offers aperture, shutter priority, manual mode and even a discrete mode that disables all sounds when you need to shoot silently.

Canon PowerShot G1 X

Posted by vitya On June - 17 - 2012

The PowerShot G-series has always been the flagship, ‘serious’ digital compact camera from Canon – the camera for those willing to sacrifice the ‘compact’ part for a chunkier camera because it comes with manual controls and brilliant images.

The PowerShot G1 X, the successor to the two-year old G12, warrants a break-away from the G numbers, not because number G13 would make an unlucky name, but because the G1 X comes with a brand-new 14MP CMOS sensor. It’s the largest sensor ever in a G-series camera, six times larger than the one in the G12, and slightly larger than the Micro Four Thirds sensor in Panasonic and Olympus’ mirror less system cameras. Canon PowerShot S100

Posted by vitya On January - 18 - 2012

Canon’s follow-up to the popular S95, the PowerShot S100 is priced slightly higher but improves on the S95 in many ways. Its zoom lens starts at a wider focal length and delivers a longer zoom range, recycle time has been cut drastically, and a GPS has been added. That’s enough for it to replace the S95 as our favorite high-end pocket camera.

The 12-megapixel S100 is almost identical in size and design to its predecessor. At 2.3 by 3.9 by 1.1 inches (HWD) and 7 ounces, it is a bit larger and heavier than competing compact cameras.

The lens covers a 24-105mm (35mm equivalent) field of view, which is a 5x zoom range. At the wide end it opens up to f/2, which lets quite a bit of light in, but the aperture narrows to f/5.9 at the telephoto end of its zoom.

The 3-inch LCD is packed with 460k dots, and even though it is as crisp and bright as the screen found on the S95, it is no longer the best you’ll find on a point-and-shoot camera. Other pocket models, including the Samsung TL500, now employ twice-as-sharp 920k-dot screens. Read the rest of this entry »
